I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of your Despatch No. 262 of 22nd. September last enclos-

-ing a Memorandum explaining the method by which expenditure on

Public Works Materials and Stores should be estimated and

accounted for.

2.

The average expenditure locally incurred

under this head for the last 4 years has amounted to $240,000

and in accordance with paragraph 2 of the Memorandum the value

of the standard stock should therefore be fixed at $120,000.

Having regard however to the time taken by the Crown Agents,

amounting in four typical cases now before me to from 10 to 11

months, in the execution of indents and to the distance of this

Colony from England, I am of opinion that the sum assigned
